At 3:53 this morning, Lafayette, Carencro, Scott, Cankton, and Prairie Fire Departments responded to 1113 Rue Des Etoiles to a reported house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the dwelling. Firefighters entered the dwelling attempting to locate the fire. They managed to reach the smoke-filled upstairs area at which time they discovered the fire was in the attic. While extinguishing the fire in the attic, the fire penetrated the roof unbeknownst to the interior attack crew. Exterior emergency crews sounded the alert to evacuate due to the fire engulfing the roof. Interior firefighting crews exited the dwelling just as the roof and ceiling began to collapse. All interior firefighters escaped without any injuries. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately thirty minutes before getting it under control. The two-story dwelling, owned by Ms. Dawn Laviolette, was completely destroyed by the early morning blaze. Ms. Laviolette and her daughter where asleep when they were alerted by the sound of their smoke alarm. They noticed the upstairs was filled with smoke. They were able to get the pets out and called 911. Fire investigators are examining the scene and interviewing the occupants to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Preliminary results indicate that the fire originated in the attic of the dwelling. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
